Artists Join Campaign for a Greener, Healthier Britain

A host of top musicians are helping launch a competition with Walking Works to find the perfect music compilation for walking to work. Walking Works is a new campaign run by Living Streets, the national charity that campaigns for better streets and more walking

The Walking Works campaign encourages commuters to walk for all or part of their journey to work, a great way to incorporate regular exercise into their routine, reducing stress, elevating their mood, burning calories (handy in the run up to Christmas) and leaving no carbon footprint.

To promote the campaign they have asked several musicians to nominate their own favourite ‘walk to work’ music including Lukas Wooller (Maxïmo Park), Jack Johnson, Roddy Woomble (Idlewild), Tony Crow (Lambchop), Eddi Reader (Fairground Attraction), Adem, Vashti Bunyan, Max Tundra, Emmy the Great and John Douglas (The Trashcan Sinatras), all of who’s favourite walking tracks are listed below.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, said: “There are lots of reasons to leave the car at home and try walking – not only to save the pennies in the run up to Christmas, but also to fit exercise into your life in an easy way.

“Every year you see adverts for driving CDs, so we wanted to put together the dream compilation for people walking to work that will put a spring in your step. With the right music, people can really get into the rhythm of walking, and feel the maximum benefit. My personal favourite walking track is Break My Stride by Blue Lagoon - I challenge you to listen to it without getting a spring in your step!”

Walking Works are asking the public to pledge to use their legs more and nominate their favourite tracks to create a playlist of the ‘Ultimate Walking Compilation’ a tongue-in-cheek alternative to the dozens of ‘driving’ compilation albums available. Everyone who signs up on the website will be entered into a competition to win a top of the range Nike + iPod (worth £150) or one of five Creative Zen MP3 players, preloaded with the Ultimate Walking Compilation playlist (worth £50).

To help you get in the walking mood we even dusted down our textbooks and knocked up a formula to estimate the perfect tempo to walk along to. There’s a fair bit of science involved here (well GCSE physics at any rate) but trust us it works (or professors among you see below*). Our resident office DJ even had these suggestions for those looking to soundtrack their stroll.

People should enter the competition by pledging to walk more and offering their perfect walking track suggestion, at www.walkingworks.org.uk/make-the-pledge by 31st December 2008. Walking Works is a national campaign, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and Transport for London.

Living Streets’ Chief Executive Tony Armstrong is available to talk about the music competition, as well as the scientific secrets of perfect walking music. Jeremy Clarkson, on the other hand, is unavailable for comment.
