Community Spirit? Get nattering to the neighbours with the Moston Marchers
One group in Manchester is proving how putting your best foot forward not only makes you healthier and happier; it gets you chatting with your neighbours too.
We all know that walking is good for your health but research shows that people who walk together, talk more and get to know each other better. Sometimes meeting new people and taking those first steps out of the front door can be a daunting task but that’s where the ‘Get Walking’ team comes in.
The Ramblers BIG lottery funded ‘Get Walking Keep Walking’ has joined forces with Adactus Housing Association to encourage Mostonians to get out, get walking, and get to know each other better throughout April and May. The ‘Moston Marchers’ will lead local residents around little known pathways and secret routes helping them to uncover the hidden heart of Moston and discover a little local community spirit to boot.
The FREE walks programme is meeting at 2pm at Broadhurst Park Surestart, Lightbrowne Road, Moston, Manchester, M40 0FJ from Wednesday 14th April onwards. The walks will run each Wednesday and ANYONE and EVERYONE are welcome to join.
Annette Crane, Outreach officer for Get Walking Keep Walking in Manchester, said:
“When people walk, they talk – it breaks down the barriers. Walking just seems to loosen people’s tongues and so many people have made new friends through Get Walking.”
Anne Corrigan, Neighbourhood Development Officer for Adactus Housing, commented:
“Moston Marchers is another fantastic opportunity for Adactus to work with residents in North Manchester and help improve local community spirit. Residents can take part and re-discover their local area, get fitter while controlling their weight as well as make new friends and have some fun in the process!"
