Get Walking for Get Moving!

10.10.08 The South London Ramblers' Get Walking Keep Walking team have organised a walk on Friday 10th October, as part of the first national Get Moving Week celebrating mental health and exercise.

Get those walking shoes on, and come and enjoy an autumn morning with the South London Get Walking Keep Walking team next week. The team have organised a beautiful walk, as part of the first national Get Moving Week celebrating mental health and exercise.

Get Moving is a nation-wide week of events from 4-12 October 2008, that brings people with and without mental health problems together around fun and physical activity to spread the word about mental wellbeing, the benefits of exercise and to tackle stigma and discrimination around the issue of mental health.

Big Lottery funded Get Walking Keep Walking is a pioneering urban healthy walking programme run by the Ramblers’ Association, which is currently helping hundreds of South Londoners make walking a part of their everyday lives.

Get Walking Officer and walk organiser, Charlotte Walker, said: “Not only will the walk be a great morning out where everyone can get some fresh air and exercise – which is proven to boost mental wellbeing – but it will also raise awareness of mental health problems and allow people with and without mental health issues to come and enjoy the event together.”

The walk will be a pleasant 2.5 mile amble, taking in some very pretty Stockwell streets and historic buildings. It has been planned specially with no steep climbs so everyone can join in! The walk starts at the SHARP project, 308-313 Brixton Road, SW9 7AA AT 10.00am and ends at Battersea Park, where a range of exciting activities and demonstrations will be taking place. If you are still sizzling with energy, then you can join the mass 1 mile walk when you arrive at the Park!

Each walker will receive a warm welcome and be offered a hot drink and a snack to kick start the morning, as well as a free goodie bag and pedometer! If you would like to know more then please call Charlotte Walker on 020 7926 8997 / 020 7926 8998

charlotte.walker@ramblers.org.uk or simply just come along! Please be prompt as we aim to leave the centre at 10.15am.
