On June 22, two pupils from Willow Primary school in Doncaster will officially open the region’s second Bike It Action day and teacher’s conference, organised by sustainable transport charity, Sustrans.

Accompanied by their bike champion, teacher Nichola King, Lian Haynes and Charlotte Lilley, both aged 10, will cycle from Willow Primary school on Alston Rd to welcome more than 30 teachers and local authority staff to the conference, which celebrates Doncaster’s hugely successful five years of working with the Sustrans Bike It project. Sustrans has worked with dozens of local schools, targeting hundreds of youngsters to encourage them to choose two wheels instead of four for the school run.

Doncaster was one of the first local authorities to join in with the project which now runs in over 60 local authority areas across the UK. Schools that work with Sustrans typically see levels of cycling double within the first year of the project. Pupil, Lian Haynes, comments, “It will be really great to tell all the people from the council and schools how great Sustrans’ work is and how much we love cycling.”  “We’ve been a Sustrans Bike It school since January and have had loads of fun. Lots of us are cycling to school every day now.”

Teacher Nichola King adds: “It’s great the children are going to be presenting at this conference and sharing their experiences with the other Doncaster schools. We are very proud of them.”
