Residents invited to join heritage trail walk in Wath-Upon-Dearne to celebrate Rotherham Walking Festival

Wath-Upon-Dearne residents are invited to join local historian Alex Fleming on a one mile heritage walk through the town centre during the week-long Walking Festival in Rotherham (29th June to 5th July).

To join the walk, meet at: The Library , Montgomery Square, Wath upon Dearne on Thursday 2nd July 2009, 10.30am,

The walk, which has been organised by members of Wath Community History Group, in partnership with Wentworth North Area Assembly and National Charity Living Streets’ Fitter for Walking project, aims to highlight the historic beauty of Wath whilst encouraging people to walk more locally.

Entitled ‘Walking the Past – Improving Your Health’ the walk will take in a mile figure-of-eight route through Wath town centre lasting approximately an hour.

Wath Community History Group is celebrating its 30th anniversary and the walk is something of an appetiser for the birthday buffet in the evening. A fully illustrated colour leaflet has been produced outlining the history of places on the route and will be available on Thursday.

Living Streets launched the Fitter for Walking project in Rotherham last year to help local people overcome barriers to walking and promote more local walking journeys. Jim Shaw, Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Co-ordinator has been working closely with local residents and community groups to ensure that people’s views of their local streets are heard. With funding from the Big Lottery Fund and in partnership with Rotherham Council, the walk on Thursday is designed to encourage people to get to know their local area better and to feel part of the community.

Fitter for Walking is part of a group of projects that will be helping 2 million people nationwide become more physically active, by regularly walking or cycling as part of their daily lives.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, said:

“This is an exciting opportunity for everyone involved in organising this trail. Not only will it highlight the rich history and significance that Wath has to offer, but we hope that it will encourage residents to walk more locally, giving them the opportunity to socialise, enjoy their local streets and to see what Wath town has to offer in terms of shops and services. There are so many benefits to walking, not just to make the roads less congested and polluted, but to develop more of a community as you get to know your local area better.”

If you would like to know anymore information about the walk, please contact Jim Shaw on 07590 048491 or email jim.shaw@livingstreets.org.uk
