Local residents will be teaming up with National charity Living Streets to take part in a series of organised walks as part of the charity’s Fitter for Walking project.
Living Streets launched the Fitter for Walking project in Wolverhampton last year to help residents create streets they can be proud of. With funding from the Big Lottery Fund and in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council and Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust, the walks are designed to encourage people to get to know their local area and to explore the sights on their doorsteps.
On Tuesday 13th October, Hema Kasi-Patel, Fitter for Walking Coordinator for the West Midlands will be kick starting a series of walks around the area, following parts of the Sculpture Trail. The sculptures on the trail have been designed by 19 different artists in different shapes, size and styles, reflecting the areas heritage and its promise for the future. There will be a further 2 walks on the following two Tuesdays which will highlight a series of other landmarks and points of interest so people they can truly get to know and appreciate their area.
To join in the walks, meet at: Lunt Community Centre, Lunt Road, Bilston, WV14 7HF. Tuesday 13th, 20th, 27th October, 10am.
Fitter for Walking is part of a group of projects that will be helping 2 million people nationwide become more physically active, by regularly walking or cycling as part of their daily lives. It is funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Wellbeing Programme. Wolverhampton City Council and Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust are official partners in the Fitter for Walking project – a fantastic move that shows they are eager to work together with Living Streets and residents to improve their streets and encourage people to get walking locally. This partnership approach is vital in making sure that the project can make a real difference over the projects four year duration.
Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for residents of Bilston to really get to know their local area. There are so many benefits to walking, not just to make the roads less congested and polluted, but to develop more of a community as you get to know your local area better.
“We are told all the time that we need to be more active, but it doesn’t have to be hard - making small changes to your everyday routine, such as having a brisk walk can work wonders in transforming your health. We are really excited about these walks and encourage local residents to come down and join us.”
All are welcome to join the walks and are encouraged to arrive ten minutes before to register. Sensible footwear is advised. If you would like any further information about the walks or any other initiatives in the area, please contact Hema Kasi-Patel on 07595 781875, or email hema.kasi-patel@livingstreets.org.uk
