The second ITV Walk4Life Day was held on Sunday 25 September and proved to be a fantastic success.
Over 100 events took place across the country ranging from regular health walks to walking festivals and thousands of people attended!
ITV's Walk4Life Day is coordinated by the Department for Health with the Walk4Life website providing the official website and central event calendar. The website experienced record numbers of visitors over the Walk4Life weekend and the team are very much hoping that the visitors will return to try some of the walks on the site.
The events were all free and open to everyone from experienced ramblers to first time walkers.
In addition to the main events organised by the Ramblers, Active Norfolk, Natural England, Allerdale Council, Swindon Borough Council and Ramblers Cymru, there were lots of smaller events run by local walking groups and organisations.
During the build up to the event, Public Health Minister Anne Milton said:
“Walking is a great way to have fun together for free. Fast walking for at least ten minutes improves health and counts towards that crucial activity we all need to do each day. Find your local Walk4Life and get walking.”
As well as encouraging people to walk more, the walks celebrated the launch of Walk4Life Miles – new one-mile-long walking routes up and down the country. Positioned in parks, along footpaths and along canals, they are easy to follow routes marked with distinctive yellow way-markers showing the start and end. There will be 2,012 of them across England by 2012.
