As a consortium of the leading walking, cycling and health organisations we have a common belief; regular walking and cycling is beneficial for physical and mental health.
Together, through fifty England-wide practical projects we are committed to encouraging and enabling 1.8 million more people to be physically active by 2012
This £30 million programme, of which £20 million has come from the Big Lottery Fund’s Well-being Fund, focuses upon sedentary and traditionally hard-to-reach audiences who have the greatest potential for change and the biggest health gains.
Travel Actively projects range from Bangladeshi women’s walking groups to bike clubs for teens on inner-city estates and GP referral schemes for those with health issues including heart, weight or mental health problems.
Each project tackles wellbeing through regular walking and cycling. Over the next four years, these practical projects will generate a body of evidence to show how regular active travel can have a positive impact on health and wellbeing.
The Big Lottery Fund is the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors and has been rolling out grants to health, education, environment and charitable causes across the UK since its inception in June 2004.
The Wellbeing Fund provides cash resources to support the development of healthier lifestyles and to improve wellbeing.
