Families in Doncaster enjoyed fun bike rides and a fabulous picnic in the sun during a Sustrans’ Fresh Air Miles event on 31 May. The event was organised by Sustrans in partnership with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and part-funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
The rides began in three different areas around Doncaster: Armthorpe, Cantley and Rossington and followed a mixture of traffic-free routes and quiet lanes with plenty of rest stops along the way.
Ranging from two to just over seven miles in length, there was a ride to suit all abilities. Families on the Armthorpe ride were accompanied by the amazing Bike It sound system which provided lively music along the way, adding to the excitement!
Big Lottery funded Bike It officer Tom Collister who led a ride said:
“The fresh air miles ride in Doncaster was fantastic as many of the families involved had never experienced bike riding as a family activity before. There was a really nice sociable atmosphere on the rides and everyone seemed to have a great day.”
The rides all met at Town Fields – a huge green space in central Doncaster – for a picnic and some active games of Rounders.
Doncaster’s Public Health Improvement Officer Karen said:
“All the partners involved, including the NHS Doncaster, Doncaster Council and Sustrans, worked together in partnership to make it a great day for everyone. It was fantastic to see so many people out and about, getting some exercise and having lots of fun.”
Everyone who attended the event entered a free prize draw to win a Specialized Hotrock bike.
Result: The effective partnership between Sustrans, NHS Doncaster and Doncaster Council has given families the confidence and motivation to cycle together for fun and to improve their health and well-being.
