CTC Cycle Champions

Bradford

Vivien Carnea is the CTC Cycling Development Officer working in partnership with and based at the local environment charity; Bradford Community Environment Project (BCEP)

Viv has a tough task ahead; to promote cycling as a sustainable travel alternative. The aim of the Bradford programme is to encourage thousands of people to jump on their bike when undertaking local (2 miles or under) journeys, rather than slumping in their cars. 50% of car journeys in Bradford are of 2 miles or less.

The programme will promote the personal and planet health benefits of cycling, as well as promoting it as a low stress, safe, sociable and fun activity.

Each group receives support, advice and equipment to encourage them to take up cycling. Vivien will target groups from disadvantaged communities typically under-represented amongst cyclists.

Vivien has already initiated cycling amongst women’s groups, disability organisations and groups from the black and minority ethnic (BME) communities.

The project will work with schools and community centres across Bradford, focusing on the BME communities. Bradford is 14.5% British Pakistani and 1.1% British Bangladeshi. 80% of the latter live in wards that lie in the top 10% of deprivation indices. Bradford itself is 30th out of 354 English local authorities in terms of deprivation.

The project will also work with projects supporting people recovering from mental health problems.
