Amanda Salt is the CTC Cycling Development Officer working with Cycle Derby, the branded name for all things cycling run in partnership with Derby City Council.
CTC is working with Cycle derby to address the needs of harder to reach groups within the city of Derby by developing new delivery methods and refining those already available to target specific audiences.
Amanda is attempting creative and innovative approaches to engage these varied audiences and develop a strong understanding of the barriers that prevents cycling.
The groups will come from disadvantaged communities typically under-represented amongst cyclists. Beneficiary groups include women’s groups, disability organisations, and members of minority ethnic communities.
The indicators of health are significantly worse in many of these communities, in particular relating to obesity and incidents of heart disease and stroke.
Having identified the most deprived wards and a range of groups that service socially deprived and disabled young people as the first priorities in years 1-2 of the project,
Amanda will ensure more specific targeting on BME communities as the project progresses. The aim is to reach young people through community networks outside schools as well as schools in the most deprived wards.
