East Hampshire Cycle Champions Project is a partnership between East Hampshire District Council and the Forestry Commission.
The East Hampshire project is to enable cycling among sections of the community currently not riding, including a cycle for all centre for people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, improve mental well-being and to get people physically activity
Sarah Walker is the CTC Cycle Champions Officer for East Hampshire.
The starting point for this work has been to establish Alice Holt Forest as a cycling location for anyone with physical, learning or sensory impairments.
Many new cyclists now visit the forest, either as individuals or as groups, to use specialist accessible cycling equipment in a woodland setting. Other East Hampshire locations are being piloted as great places to ride, regardless of cycling ability.
Further groups, such as the elderly, the convalescent or simply the out-of-practice, are enjoying Forest Discovery Rides - laid back forest rides with no pressure and lots of assistance.
These short outings are great confidence boosters for anyone needing a little encouragement to get onto two wheels. Volunteers are running sessions and lending expertise, keen to ensure the sustainability of the project.
