Mark Gumbs is the CTC Cycling Development Officer working in partnership with the Sports Development department of Manchester Leisure, a part of Manchester City Council.
Mark is a qualified cycle trainer working with health referral and disability groups in Manchester.
Manchester has some of the worst levels of deprivation in England; this is reflected in its health statistics. The project aims to develop ‘Cycling for Health’ schemes in public parks in the Manchester City Council area, targeting groups known to have low levels of physical activity.
By incorporating cycling as a component part of exercise on PCT referral schemes and by delivering National Standard Training and Health on Wheels training, it is hoped that an impact can be made on the health and wellbeing of the residents of Manchester City.
Opportunities afforded by Mark for cycle maintenance training and the use of recycled bicycles; organised in cooperation with crime and disorder partner agencies, are seen as assisting new or lapsed cyclists onto a saddle.
Mark will support the creation of Community Cycling clubs and encourage communities to make use of their local parks
Early successes at Wythenshawe Park, Boggart Hole Clough, Debdale Park and Platt Fields Park bode well for a change in attitude to health and cycling.
