CTC Cycle Champions

North Yorkshire

Martyn Bolt is the CTC Cycling Development Officer working in partnership with North Yorkshire Sport; based at their offices in Harrogate.

The Champions Project aims to impact upon the health of the North Yorkshire community, the social interaction of hard to reach groups and encourage active travel leading to a fitter, healthier, happier and hopefully less car-reliant community in North Yorkshire.

The project focus will be on people with disabilities, older people, women and girls, and those suffering from rural deprivation and isolation. They will be reached through targeted community groups identified by Martyn and his partner organisations.

The primary focus will be people with learning and physical disability and those suffering rural isolation. It is known that physical activity programmes and social networks can have an important impact on mental health in these groups.

The secondary emphasis will target women and girls who have far higher levels of inactivity than men.

The project will provide access to bikes, (either new or recycled); train individuals under the National Standards for Cycle Training; train volunteers to become cycle instructors/mechanics; working with community groups and organisations.

Martyn will give access to a central hub of resources, a supportive network and provides an opportunity for social activities such as group cycle rides.
