CTC Cycle Champions

Sheffield

Steve Marsden is the CTC Cycling Development Officer working in partnership with the Heeley Development Trust in Sheffield. The area covered suffers from multiple deprivations; housing, health, education, transport, employment, crime and capacity building issues.

Steve, a mountain bike enthusiast and cycle trainer at heart, and a community development officer by profession, has expertise in the development of cycling programmes.

He is promoting the cycling agenda; transport, cycle training, maintenance, groups and rides, and will integrate these programmes with the work of the local community organisations with whom he will work in partnership.

Steve is currently identifying lead “champions” within each group who will receive additional training in project sustainability and will carry on the programmes after a year’s input.

Targeted groups include women’s organisations, young people at risk of crime and physical disability groups, all of which have high levels of inactivity.

Two ‘Cycle Back to Health’ pilot projects have commenced the pilot projects meet in two local parks. Instructors demonstrate and explain the benefits of cycling for health, then introduce gentle and pleasant cycling through the park.

Bikes are provided along with qualified cycle trainers. The project introduces cycling to people who have had health issues or want to get healthier and fitter.
