Get Walking Keep Walking DIY

Nationwide

The project distributes DIY packs centred on a 12-week walking plan, alongside imaginatively written and presented motivational and information materials, a logbook for goal-setting and recording daily walking time and/or steps over a twelve-week period, and in some cases a step counter.

Though the pack is free, participants have to register in order to obtain one, providing health and other monitoring information and agreeing to a follow-up call to monitor their progress. Those signing up also receive a quarterly newsletter. Messaging emphasises general well-being, stress relief and other benefits of walking such as discovering the local area and socialising with companions, as well as physical health.

The project is one of a group of six projects delivered within the Active Travel Consortium by the Ramblers, Britain’s biggest charity working to promote walking and improve conditions for everyone who walks in England, Wales and Scotland.

Five sister projects covering five London boroughs and the Cities of Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield provide organised local programmes to support people using the 12-week plan as well as distributing DIY packs locally. This sixth project spreads some of the benefits of the local projects across England by making packs available outside these locations too.

The project is match funded by Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust.

DIY packs can be distributed at events or can be requested by individuals. A virtual online version of the pack is available at http://www.getwalking.org/ The availability of packs is carefully promoted to reach the project’s target audiences of inactive people and those most at risk from lack of exercise, with some packs distributed in partnership with other organisations targeting specific audiences such as those with low blood pressure or diabetes for example.
